Why curved shapes in interior design are the key to understated luxury

    29 октября 2025

When you open any project featuring premium furniture from recent years, you can see a common trend: the dominance of smooth, flowing lines.

The era of sharp angles and strict geometry is giving way to elegant, rounded shapes, and this is much more than just a passing trend. They refer us to natural silhouettes, giving us a subconscious feeling of security, calm and harmony.

Let's take a look at why we are so attracted to streamlined shapes and how FiftyFourms creates unique and complex shapes in its collections.

Why it's more complicated than you think

The path to products with curved elements requires absolute precision at every stage.

To create curved parts, such as the base of a sofa, bentwood technology is used: thin sheets of veneer are glued together under pressure in special moulds, taking on a specified bend. This allows for both strength and visual lightness.

Unlike simple straight-line parts, which can be obtained using standard sawing, this process not only requires more expensive equipment and materials, but also significantly increases labour intensity, as each part must be carefully selected, cut and processed.

    Psychological aspect

It is no coincidence that we are so attracted to smooth, rounded shapes in interior design — there is a deep psychological reason behind this. Research shows that our brain subconsciously perceives sharp corners as a hidden threat, which creates tension. This idea is confirmed by the work of scientists Moshe Bar and Mataly Neta, ‘Humans prefer curved visual objects,’ explaining why curved lines seem safer and more pleasant to us.

That is why every smooth curve in FiftyFourms products is not just aesthetics, but a thoughtful solution for your comfort and peace of mind. We create furniture that helps reduce stress and transforms your home into a harmonious and safe space to live in.

    Eden modular sofa

Creating the Eden sofa is a complex and labour-intensive process. Side elements made of genuine leather envelop the curved base, creating an effect of smoothness and harmony of lines. A special technology is used to achieve a streamlined silhouette reminiscent of an elegant lotus flower. We adopted this technology while working with an Italian factory.

The next stage is upholstery. Pulling premium fabric over the surface without a single wrinkle, while maintaining perfect tension, is a long and complex process that requires manual labour. Finally, each module must be joined to the next with millimetre precision so that the smooth lines are not interrupted, creating the impression of a single, monolithic object.

    Fusion Dining Table

The complexity of the Fusion table lies in two key aspects.

The shape of the tabletop itself, in the form of an infinity symbol, requires high-precision processing to achieve perfect geometry.

The most difficult part is the flawless connection of two types of veneer. This is a modern interpretation of a highly complex technique, where the joint must be completely invisible and imperceptible to the touch, creating the illusion that two different materials flow naturally into each other. The solid leather-covered supports are further proof of craftsmanship, combining manual labour with engineering precision.

    Elemento coffee table

The design of Elemento is based on the philosophy of contemplating nature in its purest form. Its shape is a direct homage to smooth stones, whose perfect, streamlined silhouettes have been honed by water and wind over centuries.

Our task is to convey this feeling of natural integrity and natural smoothness, devoid of sharp angles and abrupt transitions. Your gaze and hand can glide across its entire surface continuously, without encountering any obstacles.

The use of smooth elements in design is not just an aesthetic choice, but a deeply thoughtful approach to creating a unique space. Unlike sharp and angular shapes, which can subconsciously cause tension, streamlined contours mimic natural objects. The value of such shapes lies in the precision of their execution, because, as noted earlier, achieving a perfect curve is much more difficult than making a simple cut.

That is why streamlined shapes are becoming not just a trend, but a visual representation of harmony, tranquillity and quiet luxury in modern interiors.
